The Brick-By-Brick Approach To Maximizing Dumpster Space

Getting rid of construction waste may require renting a dumpster. After shattering old, brick steps, you may discover that the amount of broken mortar and bricks might be more than you thought. And there could be an incredible amount of sand found inside the brick steps, as sand sometimes serves as a support to the brick structure. Getting rid of the brick debris also opens the door to cleaning out the garage. Why not get the best out of the dumpster rental? Making the most out of the process involves more than randomly tossing things into the dumpster. When things land on top of one another, you could end up taking away valuable space. There's no reason to waste valuable space.

Strategizing Dumpster Usage

Randomly tossing bricks into the dumpster and then throwing old furniture on top of them may lead to "filling" the dumpster faster than expected. The trouble is that the dumpster isn't filled. Gaps and spaces may exist between the bricks, and then the furniture lands on top of the bricks. Fist-sized holes are spaces that could be filled with sand and more. Rather than make this mistake, strategize the process.

Breaking Bricks and Breaking Them Again

Using a sledgehammer to smash the brick steps might be "phase one" of the brick smashing process. Phase two could involve smashing the bricks even more. Perhaps lying a tarp down somewhere and safely using the sledgehammer to break the bricks into much smaller pieces would eventually save more space. So might more deliberately placing the bricks inside the dumpster.

Moving Bricks to the Dumpster

Instead of standing in the middle exterior area and throwing all the bricks inside, move around the dumpster. If possible, use a step ladder to look inside the dumpster to ensure the bricks are landing evenly inside. Once you're done with the bricks, dump the sand inside. Do so evenly as well. Let the sand fill into the unavoidable remaining gaps.

Demolishing Furniture

Throwing chairs, tables, and more into the dumpster will take up tons of space. Breaking a chair up with a sledgehammer or cutting pieces with a hacksaw would allow for more evenly depositing things while not wasting space. As with the bricks and sand, avoid throwing "busted" furniture in the same spot.

As always, wear the proper safety equipment when breaking, cutting, or smashing anything. Maximizing space is good, and so is maximizing safety.
