How To Clean A Dumpster That's Starting To Smell

If you are working on a long term construction project, you probably have rented dumpsters from a nearby rental facility. When they reach you, they probably smell fine, but as you use them to discard of construction waste and food waste from lunches, you run into a problem. The dumpster smells horrible. Here are some ways that you can clean it out in order to make working near it much more comfortable.

1. Spray Out Your Dumpster

Your first step is to take your dumpster and roll it down to an area where you can later allow it to drain. You are going to be partially filling the dumpster with water and you want to make sure that you don't experience the problem of not being able to transport it to the drainage site. Once there, grab your hose and attach a nozzle to it. Turn the nozzle so that it is at the strongest setting possible. Once you've done this, start spray down the walls of the dumpster, focusing on areas that are stained or look sticky. The water is going to start to collect at the bottom of the dumpster. Continue spraying until you have a few inches of water at the bottom of the dumpster.

2. Add Cleaning Solution

Add a dumpster cleaning solution. If you don't have a dumpster cleaning solution, use a cup or two of bleach mixed with dish-washing detergent. Spray your hose with the nozzle for a few more minutes until the water in the dumpster is mixed and soapy. If you notice any lasting residue on the walls, spray that as well. Allow the solution to sit in the dumpster for a few hours. After you wait, tilt the dumpster on its side and allow the water to drain.

3. Manually Scrub Anything Left

By this time, the smell should have been removed enough to make working in the dumpster bearable. While the dumpster is on its side, go inside of it and start to manually scrub anything that might be left. This will allow you to get rid of any remaining residue and remove the cause of any other smells. Use bleach and soap to get rid of everything. Make sure that everyone is wearing the appropriate protective materials. Wait for the dumpster to totally dry out overnight before putting any trash in the dumpster or else it will start to smell again quickly.
